The University of Maryland’s School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies seeks candidates for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Theatre History and Performance Studies for the academic year of 2018-2019. Applicants must propose a rigorous research agenda that takes advantage of the resources on our campus and in ourregion.

Position Description: The University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance, and PerformanceStudies (TDPS) invites applications from advanced scholars with an established record of research and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will have a strong list of publications, an established national and/or international reputation as a scholar and be prepared to teach courses in theatre history, theory, and performance studies at both graduate and undergraduate levels. They will have a distinguished record of research, of excellent teaching, of successful external grant applications, of institutional service, and of collaboration with other scholars. The candidate should also have solid experience supervising student research. Faculty at TDPS are actively involved in School governance, the intellectual and artistic life of the School, the College of Arts and Humanities, and the University community. This search is contingent upon funding.

Qualifications Required: Applicants are required to hold the PhD degree and demonstrate expertise in theatre history and performance studies. They must have a record of a minimum of five years of university or college teaching and experience supervising student research. Applicants must have a research agenda that will enhance the diversity of our PhD Program in Theatre and Performance Studies. Preference will be given to individuals who specialize in Latinx and/or Latin American theatre and performance studies. Full consideration will also be given to African and African-American theatre and performance research, and to Asian and Asian-American theatre and performance research.

Program Description: The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies has approximately 175 undergraduate and 70 graduate students enrolled in its programs. The School offers: separate BA programs in Dance and in Theatre; an MA in Theatre and Performance Studies; separate MFA programs in Dance, and in Design; and a nationally ranked PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies in which students study both fields equally. New initiatives include a ten-year funded program of International Collaboration and Research (IPCCR) that includes School and campus wide collaborations and a seed granting program for international collaborations; classes that combine design, dance, performance and scholarship in devising work that require cross-disciplinary collaboration, shared language, and expanded boundaries; a dramaturgy program linked to the area’s professional theatres, and yearly symposia. Members of our faculty work with a wide variety of University centers including, the Latin American Studies Center, the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora, the Center for the History of the New America, the Center for Research on Latino Educational Success, the Center for East Asian Studies, the Roshan Center for Persian Studies, the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, and the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity.

Facilities/Location: The University of Maryland in located along the Baltimore/Washington corridor in College Park, Maryland, a short drive or Metro ride to WDC and it’s cultural riches. We are in the northwest section of Prince George’s County, one of the most diverse counties in the country. The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies is housed in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the-art complex with six performance venues, rehearsal rooms, production shops, World Outreach classrooms, the School of Music, and the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library. Located just minutes from the Nation’s Capital, the University is linked by mass transit to the fastest growing theatre and performance market in the country. The region is home to more than 80 professional theatres, including Arena Stage, GALA Hispanic Theatre, the Kennedy Center, the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Folger Theatre, Studio Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, Signature Theatre, and Synetic Theatre. World-class research facilities of institutions such as the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Smithsonian Institutions, and Dumbarton Oaks are all within a very short commute.

    Preference will be given to applicants with experience in Latinx Theatre, AsianAmerican Theatre, African American Theatre, Arab Theatre, and/or Digital Theatre, though other specializations will beconsidered.

    Qualifications: PhD degree in Theatre or Performance Studies, conferred no later than June 1, 2018.
