Guest Artist Nick Bryson Visits TDPS

Irish contemporary dance artist/improviser Nick Bryson is visiting TDPS October 16-28, guest teaching improvisation, somatics and choreography classes, and rehearsing with undergraduate students.

Irish contemporary dance artist/improviser Nick Bryson is visiting TDPS Oct 16-28, guest teaching improvisation, somatics and choreography classes, and rehearsing with undergraduate students. He is collaborating with Dance Assistant Professor Sharon Mansur on the "INSERT [ ] HERE" project, supported in part by a UMD Creative & Performing Arts Award. Portions of this work will be shared at the Falling Forward faculty/guest artist concert November 15-17, and the full project will be presented at Dance Place, Washington, DC, June 21-22, 2014.

Friday Oct 25, 2-2:30pm in the Dance Theatre

For the first part of a combined Creative Process & Advanced Modern dance class, Nick will be sharing solo work from another project, and Nick & Sharon will share their current IH duet-ing.

During the rest of the class they will guide students through movement explorations from their project research. 

Sunday Oct 27, 5-6pm in the Dance Theatre

All sections-in-progress of the IH project, including a group section with 5 undergraduate student performers,  will be shown as the finish to their rehearsal intensive.

Also featuring DC area experimental sound artist Tara Rodgers.

Bio:

Nick Bryson trained at Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds and School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam, from where he obtained degrees. He also has a Masters with distinction in Contemporary Dance Performance from University of Limerick (2005/06). He has been Co-Artistic Director of Legitimate Bodies Dance Company based in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, County Offaly for five years, together with Cristina Goletti. Among others Nick has performed with Daghdha Dance Company, Cindy Cummings, Elena Giannotti and Aisling O'Coineen. He has an international profile with 'Hanging in There' with Damian Punch (2008/09 Aerowaves selected programme). He choreographed the 2008 trio 'Touching Distance' (Ireland/Mexico) and co-choreographed the 2012 quartet 'Second Hand Landscapes' (Ireland/Cyprus/Bulgaria). With UK-based choreographer Robin Dingemans, Nick recently won a Compass Commission, awarded by Greenwich Dance Agency and Trinity Laban in London to develop the new work 'The point at which it last made sense'. In USA he is currently developing a new project with Sharon Mansur and working with students at the University of Maryland.  He has also taught at the dance department at Luther College, Iowa. Currently in Ireland he is on the 'Origins' training conceived and instigated by Joan Davis and has a strong interest in Klein Technique. He is now based in County Wicklow.
