International Festival Honors Alvin Mayes with Inclusion of Contemporary Dance Work
March 26, 2013
Alvin Mayes brings dance to life in his own choreography as well as the works of other choreographers. He has been called on to rehearse dances of Anna Sokolow, Erika Thimey and Eric Hampton for area dance companies.
Mayes, a dance instructor in the School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies, was honored with the 2012 Maryland Council of Dance Award for Outstanding Service and Contributions to Dance in Maryland. In Summer 2012 Mayes was invited to Manta, Ecuador to create Los Ojos Sobre Manabí (or Eyes on Manabí, an Ecuadorian province) a dance work for Compañía Céibadanza, an Ecuadorian contemporary dance company.
The XI Festival Internacional "Fragmentos de Junio", held annually in Guayaquil, Ecuador has just honored Mayes by selecting his work into this year’s Festival, where it will be performed by Compañía Ceibadanza on June 23, 2013. The Festival showcases a variety of theatre, dance, puppetry, music and circus from around the world.
Congratulations to Professor Mayes!
