Congratulations to Lindsey Snyder (PhD 2009) who has just been hired by the American Shakespeare Center in Stanton, VA under a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
Lindsey Snyder (PhD 2009) has been hired by the American Shakespeare Center in Stanton, VA under a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to work with their professional company and “explore ways to build interest in the performance of Shakespeare and his contemporaries among Deaf audiences.”
Dr Snyder did her dissertation entitled Sawing the Air Thus: Translating Shakespeare into American Sign Language and the Echoes of Rhetorical Gesture, under the direction of Professor Franklin J. Hildy and has since gone on to become the authority on the translation of poetic drama into ASL. In 2007 Dr. Snyder interpreted performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, and A Christmas Carol for the American Shakespeare Center. She is a regular sign language interpreter for a number of professional theatres in the Baltimore/Washington area, has directed for several companies, including NextStop in Virgina, and served as the Director of Access & Inclusion for Faction of Fools Theatre Company, sponsored by Gallaudet University where she also serves as an adjunct professor.
