New positions announced for the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance

TDPS is seeking to fill three new positions for the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance

TDPS is seeking to fill three new faculty positions: an assistant professor of lighting (tenure track), a visiting assistant professor of digital humanities in performing arts and a multimedia technologist. These new positions are three of five new artist/scholar faculty lines funded by the creation of the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance, which is committed to the exploration of technologically enhanced live performance in all its current, emerging, and future forms.

Assistant professor of lighting (tenure track)

The successful candidate will have or show promise of a strong creative research record and an ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in lighting design for live performance. They will have related specialties including, for example, but not limited to computer-assisted-design, lighting for television or film, and automated lighting technologies. Serve as primary lighting design mentor and advisor to MFA design students for mainstage productions. The faculty member’s creative activities should be related to the program’s curriculum and reflect a high standard of quality of competence and be consistent with and support the mission and initiatives of the School and University. Participate in departmental governance.

Visiting assistant professor of digital humanities in performing arts

Duties will include developing and teaching an array of undergraduate and graduate courses that examine the practice, history, and theory of performing arts in the digital age as well as best practices in research and documentation of these developing approaches to performance. The successful candidate will maintain a program of research/creative activity appropriate to the University of Maryland’s standing as a Research I University and will regularly disseminate the results of their investigations in appropriate national/international forums. Duties may also include serving on the advisory board for the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance and serving as the Institute’s liaison with the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH); the Program for African American History, Culture and Digital Humanities (AADHUM); the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program in Digital Studies in the Arts and Humanities (DSAH); the Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture, and the University Libraries’ Digital Programs and Initiatives. The Maya Brin Institute faculty will, in addition, build their teaching portfolios by teaching general education classes and required graduate courses as appropriate to their training and experience. Participate in departmental governance.

Multimedia technologist

Duties will include developing and teaching an array of courses ranging from introductory level courses providing foundational knowledge of arts and technology to upper level and graduate coursework enhancing the connections among theatre, dance, and design. The faculty member will support the creative research in the arts and technology, including devising new works for the stage and digital media. They will foster collaboration between graduate students in the design area and undergrad students, increasing opportunities for production focused students. They will consult with the production manager on School production priorities. They will provide classroom and laboratory support. Oversight, management, and maintenance of theatre technology and software, in consultation with other faculty in the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance and the Director of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies.
