Faedra Carpenter's Book, Coloring Whiteness, wins Honorable Mention
Associate Professor Faedra Carpenter, School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies, wins book award at the 2015 American Society for Theatre Research conference in Portland Oregon. Dr. Carpenter’s book, Coloring Whiteness, was the second place winner of the prestigious Errol Hill Award given in recognition of outstanding scholarship in African American theater, drama, and/or performance studies. Her work investigates a myriad of different performance medium, from plays to street theater to visual arts to comedy sketches to TV shows from the civil rights movement to the election of Barack Obama. In announcing the award at the ASTR awards luncheon, the selection committee noted that Dr. Carpenter was able to draw on her “impressive dramaturgical and directorial expertise” to create a work that uses a “dramaturgical strategy of engagement to deliver scholarly analysis” and calls this book an “excellent practice-as-research model and a much needed addition to our field.” Congratulations Dr. Carpenter!
