Professor Hildy will be going to the Ukraine at the end of the month, following his work with The Architectural Research Group (ARG) at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.
He has been invited to attend the launch of the Ukrainian translation of the 10th edition of History of the Theatre, which he co-wrote with the late Oscar G. Brockett. The translation was undertaken by the Faculty of Culture and Arts of Lviv National University under the direction of the noted Ukrainian actor and director, Professor Bohdan Kozak, who is Head of the Faculty. It is published by Litopys Publishing House.
“When I got the invitation” recalls Professor Hildy, “my wife Cindy and I immediately accepted. You have to admire people who, after the events in the Crimea and while being faced with a separatist movement at home, an international crisis, and the potential loss of much of their natural gas supply, still found the history of theatre so important that they undertook the translation of a 688 page book about it! Professor Kozak and Litopys Publishing have made a profound statement about the significance of theatre and its amazing history in doing this. I can’t wait to meet all those involved and learn more about the rich theatrical heritage of their country.”
Professor Hildy and his wife will be in the Ukraine, on a visit that is co-sponsored by the US State Department through the American Embassy in Kiev, October 27 to November 2. He will be doing public lectures on theatre history in both Kiev and Lviv.
