Congratulations to the students of Professor Esther Kim Lee's THET489: Globalization and Theatre on a successful staged reading of plays by Gao Xingjian!
The staged reading featured excerpts of four of Gao's plays, including The Bus Stop, Le Quêteur de la Mort, Ballade Nocturne, and The Other Shore. Performers included Rachel Barlaam, Maggie Bartolomeo, Zac Brightbill, Avia Fields, Adanna Nnawuba, Phil Ramos, Chris Robeck, Jenny Rosenberg, and Mary Rose Winnard. Projections were designed by Caitlin Harris.
The playwright Gao Xingjian was present at the reading, and translator/scholar Dr. Claire Conceison of Duke University facilitated the discussion. Gao won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000 and is a renowned writer, painter, and filmmaker. His paintings and films are exhibited at the Art Gallery at UMD until December 20.
