Assistant Professor Amith Chandrashaker and Associate Professor Emeritus Brian MacDevitt have been nominated for 2024 Tony Awards recognizing excellence in live Broadway theater. Alum Matthew Buttrey M.F.A. ’18 also worked as an associate scenic designer on a nominated show.
Chandrashaker, a lighting designer for theater, dance, opera, television, concerts and events, received a nomination for Best Lighting Design of a Play for “Prayer for the French Republic,” a story of a Jewish couple and their great-grandchildren, decades apart yet facing the same struggle of anti-Semitism in Paris.
MacDevitt, a lighting designer and director, was nominated alongside Hana S. Kim for Best Lighting Design of a Musical for “The Outsiders: A New Musical,” based on the S.E. Hinton book and 1983 film about two teenagers and their chosen family of “outsiders” fighting to survive in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma. MacDevitt has previously won five Tony Awards for lighting design in plays and musicals, as well as multiple nominations.
Buttrey worked as an associate scenic designer on “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” which was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical. The revival of John Kander and Fred Ebb’s “Cabaret” showcases performers and patrons who dominated 1930s Berlin nightlife.
The awards will take place on Sunday, June 16 at 8 p.m. at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.
