TDPS is hiring a Dance Artist-in-Residence

The dance artist-in-residence will teach all levels of dance and choreograph new work.

The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies is seeking an Artist-in-Residence in Dance to teach in the graduate dance (MFA) program and the undergraduate dance major of a thriving performing arts school at the University of Maryland College Park, a Research I university located in one of the most vibrant performing arts regions in the country. This is a 9-month (August 21, 2020 to May 23, 2021) faculty position with full benefits, with the possibility of renewal. Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester, with an emphasis on physical practice and artistry and creating one performance piece for a dance concert. 

Description of duties:

  • Teach all levels of any dance form/technique
  • Choreograph or set work on student performers
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate dancers and choreographers
  • Serve as member on dance area committees
  • Participate in shared governance of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies 

Minimum qualifications:

  • Expertise in teaching any dance form/technique
  • MFA in Dance and/or equivalent professional level dance experience to merit an appointment
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in a culturally diverse environment
  • 60-credit MFA in Dance (or related discipline)
  • Professional performance experience
  • Experience in interdisciplinary approaches to dance
  • Experience teaching dance in higher education
  • Record of dance-related creative and/or scholarly research
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills

The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies is part of the College of Arts and Humanities and has approximately 200 undergraduate and 70 graduate students enrolled in its programs. The School offers: separate BA programs in Dance and in Theatre, an MA in Theatre and Performance Studies, separate MFA programs in Dance and in Design, and a nationally ranked PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies in which students study both fields equally. New initiatives include a ten-year funded program of International Collaboration and Research (IPCCR) that includes School and campus wide collaborations and a seed granting program for international collaborations; classes that combine design, dance, performance and scholarship in devising work that requires cross-disciplinary collaboration, shared language, and expanded boundaries; a dramaturgy program linked to the area’s professional theaters, and yearly symposia. Members of our faculty work with a wide variety of University centers including the Latin American Studies Center; the David C.
